How transforms work
Where to find transforms, what they act on, and how scopes let you change one value or thousands.
Transforms change text and values in place: change case, encode, hash, encrypt, mask, generate data. There are more than 60, grouped as on the edit toolbar.
Where to find them
- Edit toolbar — grouped buttons above or left of the editor.
- Transform and Crypto menus in the menu bar.
- Right-click in the editor or on a tree node.
- Command palette (⌘⇧P) — type the name, e.g. "sha256".
- AI assistant — "hash the passwords with bcrypt" runs the same operation; see AI Assistant.
What they act on
| You selected… | The transform changes… |
|---|---|
| Text in the editor | The selected text |
| A value node in the Tree | That value |
| An object or array node | The values inside it (or the key names, for the Name (keys) group) |
| Nothing | UUID operations insert at the cursor; others ask you to select first |
Scopes: one value, the same key, or the document
When the value you picked has siblings with the same key — the email of one customer in a list of customers — Quap asks how far to go:
| Scope | Changes |
|---|---|
| Selection | Only the value you picked |
| Same key | Every value with that key at the same depth — every customer's email |
| Document | Every matching value in the whole document |
The dialog shows how many values will change (Apply to 1 200 matches?). Tick Don't ask again to skip it next time. A notice confirms Applied to N values, and ⌘Z undoes all of them at once.

{ "name": "Ada", "email": "a**@e******.com" },

]Keys versus values
Case changes come in two groups. Name (keys) renames keys (user_name → userName) and leaves values alone; Value changes the values. Pick a node and the whole subtree is handled.
Transform result panel
Some operations — decoding a JWT, verifying a signature — produce a result instead of replacing your text. It opens in the Transform Result panel with Input and Output; Copy it or Apply to Source to write it into the document.
Reference
The pages in this section list every operation with its description, taken from the app:
- Text and encoding — case, trim, lists, Base64, URL, Hex, regex
- Random data and masking — realistic test data, anonymising
- Crypto — hashes, encryption, passwords, HMAC, JWT, UUID
Large files
On large JSON and NDJSON files (Pro) the same operations work across the whole file, with all three scopes, a progress bar, cancel and undo. See Editing large files.
