Editing large files
Change, mask and sort data across files of many gigabytes, with progress, cancel and undo.
Change values across the whole file
It works exactly like on small files: pick a value in the Tree (or select text), choose an operation from the edit toolbar or the right-click menu, and choose the scope: Selection, Same key or Document.
Pick the operation
For example Mask on one email value in the Tree.
Confirm
Quap takes a quick look through the file and asks Apply to N matches?. On very large files it may say At least N matches — the whole file will be scanned, because it hasn't reached the end yet.
Follow the progress
A progress bar shows how far it has got. Cancel stops the change and leaves the file as it was.
Done
Quap reports N values changed, and the tree and editor show the new content.
On large JSON and NDJSON files you can change keys and values, hash, encrypt, mask, fill in random values, delete, duplicate, remove duplicates and sort keys. CSV, XML and YAML support the same operations on their records; see CSV, XML and YAML.
Whole-document operations
| Operation | On large JSON / NDJSON |
|---|---|
| Format / Minify | Works on files of any size |
| Clean | Removes the BOM, comments, trailing commas and over-escaped quotes. If a file needs bigger repairs, such as missing brackets, Quap tells you |
| Sort a list | The Sort dialog lists the arrays and keys in the file; pick one and Quap sorts it |
| Convert | To CSV or YAML; the result opens as a new file. Code generation works too |
Undo and redo
Every change to a large file can be undone. ⌘Z first undoes your typing, then the last larger change; ⌘⇧Z redoes it.
- Quap keeps the last 10 changes per file (up to 1 GiB of undo data).
- The undo history is cleared when you close the tab or restart Quap.
- If the file was changed outside Quap, or you have unsaved typing, save first; Quap won't undo over it.
Folding
On large JSON and NDJSON files, every line that opens an object or a list ({ or [) gets a fold arrow, even when the block spans the whole file. Finding the end of a very long block can take a moment (Finding the end of the block). Editing, replacing all or formatting opens the folds again.
The AI assistant on large files
The assistant works on large JSON and NDJSON files too. It looks at the first records to plan, then works through the whole file with a progress bar, and you can stop it at any time. You can mask, filter, delete, set values, fill in random data, transform and reformat values, find and replace, reshape records to a template and analyse. The result is shown first; Apply writes it to the file and Undo brings the original back. If you ask for something that isn't available on large files yet, Quap tells you what is.
