Large files

Open, search and edit files of many gigabytes as smoothly as small ones.

Pro feature

Files of 4 MiB and more need Quap Pro. On Free, opening one shows Quap Pro required with a link to Settings. See Free and Pro.

Database dumps, log exports and API snapshots grow to hundreds of megabytes quickly. Quap opens them without loading the whole file at once, so even a multi-gigabyte file opens in seconds, scrolls smoothly and leaves your computer responsive.

Opening

Open a large file like any other: ⌘O, drag and drop, or the project tree. A short progress window appears while Quap prepares the file. You can start scrolling and searching before it has finished counting the lines.

What's different from small files

  • The editor shows part of the file at a time. It loads more as you scroll. Very long single lines are shown in pieces; use the horizontal slider or Shift + scroll to move along them. To add line breaks to a file that is one long line, format it first.
  • No error checking while you type. Quap doesn't check a huge file in the background. If something can't be read, for example when you format, it points out the errors in the editor.
  • Changes cover the whole file. Before a change runs, Quap tells you how many values it will affect. For very large files this is an estimate (At least N matches — the whole file will be scanned).
  • Saving large results asks where to save when the result is bigger than 4 MiB.
  • Encodings: large files are always UTF-8.
